buttonThe small town of Merriwa is located on the Golden Highway in the Upper Hunter and is about halfway between Dubbo and Newcastle. Surrounded by fertile countryside, it flourished as an agricultural area after its settlement in 1839. There are many fine examples of colonial architecture in its homesteads, courthouses, police stations, hotels and churches. Many of these can be discovered on the Merriwa Town Walk which can be obtained from the Merriwa Visitor Information Centre. Merriwa is a great base for exploring the outdoor and cultural attractions of the Upper Hunter. Make sure you visit the The Battery Rock picnic area, it is a collection of spectacular basalt rock formations estimated to be around 35 million years old. Also explore the nearby Goulburn River National Park and the country towns of Sandy Hollow and historic Cassilis. Don't miss the Festival of the Fleeces with its famous 'Running of the Sheep', hundreds of sheep run down the Golden Hwy in red socks! Held every June long weekend celebrating the town's agricultural and rural heritage.
