Situated at the junction of the Namoi and Barwon Rivers, it is an excellent fishing retreat. Walgett is a rich sheep, cattle and wheat-producing region. Walgett is also a stop on the Great Inland Way, a tourist route that travels 2,956 kilometres from Sydney to Cairns, through inland New South Wales. This spectacular journey weaves together a rich tapestry of wineries, World Heritage national parks and historic towns that sprang to life during the days of the gold rush. Walgett is also a stop on the Kamilaroi Highway, a tourist route that travels from Willow Tree just south of Tamworth, West all the way to Bourke via Quirindi, Gunnedah, Narrabri, Walgett and Brewarrina
