Kerosene mining was established in Mount Kembla in the 1860s and operated until 1880, at which point coal mining and the construction of the railway line began. Whilst visiting Mt Kembla pop in to Mt Kembla Hotel which is heritage-listed and the oldest Weatherboard Hotel in the Illawarra. Grab a beer and enjoy scenic views of the Escarpment and surroundings or take a self guided walk of the town and learn about Mt Kembla's fascinating past.
