buttonKilkivan is a small, relaxed country town with a unique ‘frontier’ feel. It was near Kilkivan in 1852 that gold was first discovered in Queensland leading to a gold rush. Many amateur prospectors still pan for gold in the surrounding countryside intersected by numerous small ranges and ravines. The town has open spaces and delightful heritage buildings, some of which have been fully restored. Kilkivan is one of only a few towns situated on the Bicentennial National Trail - a 5000 kilometre long trail stretching from Cooktown in Queensland, to Healesville in Victoria. Kilkivan is home to the Great Kilkivan Horse Ride, a spectacular sight attracting over 1000 horses, riders and horse drawn vehicles every April. Riders traverse 20 to 30 kilometress of beautiful countryside before joining the grand parade through the township. A new experience for the region is the Kilkivan Rail Trail, where mountain bikers and hikers can travel the 27 kilometre journey on the old rail corridor from Kilkivan to Goomeri.
