View more >>>This historic tin mining town on the banks of the Wild River is the oldest town on the Atherton Tablelands. Buildings include a wonderful collection of Queensland architectural styles, from churches to public buildings and large houses with wide verandahs. The picturesque town is enhanced by rich colours of golden wattles in winter, and in spring the purple Jacaranda trees are an attraction enjoyed by day-trippers and photographers. At almost 1000 metres above sea level, Herberton’s climate is usually cooler, drier and less humid than the coast and winters can be frosty. Perfect conditions for outdoor activities. The well-preserved town centre can be explored on a self-guided heritage walk and offers interpretive photo posts highlighting historic scenes. It’s heritage-listed buildings host an eclectic assortment of shops and cafes, with the historic Royal Hotel an imposing feature of the main street. The Herberton Mining Museum and Visitor Information Centre presents an interesting and educational interpretation of the region's extensive mining and social history and can provide walking maps and brochures. Situated on the 24 hectare Great Northern Mine, an interpreted walk through the mine site features restored machinery sheds with rare examples of early deep haul shaft mining machinery. The walk leads to the Herberton Fire Trails with glorious vistas popular with bushwalkers and mountain bikers. On the outskirts of Herberton is the amazing Herberton Historic Village, a well-deserved winner of multiple tourism awards. This major attraction features a collection of over 60 historic buildings, each of which is a museum in its own right. Known as the town of museums, Herberton also is home to Australia’s only Spy and Camera Museum plus the Atherton-Herberton Historic Railway and Railway Museum.
