buttonAffectionately known as The Bay and Australia's Southern Rock Lobster Capital, Port MacDonnell is one of the unspoiled coastal treasures located half way between Adelaide and Melbourne. Featuring magnificent rugged coastline and natural beauty, it has the charm of a sleepy, authentic fishing village, which awakens during Lobster fishing season from October to May. As the southernmost port in South Australia, it was once the second busiest but now it's a great place to enjoy a myriad of water sports like surfing, sailing or boating. The traditional owners, the Boandik People, lived largely on produce from the sea and the location is renowned for Tuna fishing especially in May when the Offshore Angling Club hold their annual competition. The more adventurous can try cave diving or snorkeling in internationally renowned sinkholes and ponds, like nearby Kilsby Sinkhole, the Little Blue Lake, Piccaninnie Ponds or Ewens Ponds, or in one of the many picturesque bays on the outskirts of town. You can climb Mount Schank, a dormant volcano, meander along a walking trail or bush track at Dingley Dell or Germein Reserve or take a 4 wheel drive experience along the beach. While in Port MacDonnell take the time to relax with family and friends on one of the beaches or playgrounds with fish and chips or a BBQ or enjoy tasting local produce at a cafe or the hotel. The golf and lawn bowls clubs welcome guests and the Maritime Museum, located within the Community Complex and Visitor Information Outlet, offers a chance to immerse yourself in a bit of history. An annual street party, the Bay Escape; Food, Wine and Lifestyle event, is held annually in February bringing visitors and the community together for a celebration of local food, wine and entertainment. Port MacDonnell is located approximately 30kms south of the city of Mount Gambier and boasts a myriad of beachfront, historic, luxury, family and pet friendly accommodation options including self contained holiday apartments and houses, hotel, camping and caravan park accommodation, along with free camping for self-contained recreational vehicles.
