buttonA little over an hour from Melbourne lies the High Country town of Nagambie, home to undefeated champion racehorse Black Caviar as well as leading wineries, fertile plains and sparkling waterways. Take a wander through town and check out the statue of Black Caviar, cool off in the waters of Lake Nagambie, or explore the famous Goulburn River. Fine wines and gourmet produce like homegrown olive oil are the order of the day at renowned local wineries, like Mitchelton Wines with its distinctive observation tower and Tahbilk Winery and Vineyard with its cafe and adjoining wetlands and wildlife reserve. From Shiraz and Tempranillo to fun on the water: choose from any number of water-based activities, from boating, jet skiing and sailing to fishing, rowing or canoeing. And for the serious competitors, Lake Nagambie hosts Australia's national standard rowing and canoeing titles during summer. Nature lovers will enjoy spending time down by the Goulburn River, one of Victoria's largest inland river systems. Wander through the native flora, get close to local wildlife and settle in for a spot of bird watching. The river passes through Lake Nagambie and on to the historic Goulburn Weir, seven kilometres north of Nagambie. For a different perspective, sky dive, glide or take to the skies in a hot air balloon. Popular local events include the APS Regatta (Heads of the River) and the Nagambie on Water Festival in March. Nagambie is 122 kilometres or just over an hour north of Melbourne travelling along the Hume Freeway to Seymour, then taking the Shepparton turn-off onto the Goulburn Valley Highway.
