buttonOne of the largest and most productive fishing boat harbours in Western Australia, Port Denison is also a top spot for recreational fishing and water sports that’s blessed with beautiful white sandy beaches. You’ll find the hub of Port Denison’s surfing, body boarding, kite surfing and stand-up paddle boarding action down at South Beach – a picture-postcard setting for a fun family day on the beach. From the jetties or beaches, you can have a go at hooking your own dinner. The waters are renowned for their abundance of tailor, snapper, whiting, dhufish and in season, rock lobster. If you have no luck at catching your own fish you can always call into the fish shop on the wharf. Seaz Denison Seafood sell fresh fish and lobster. Call into the Visitors Centre to collect a Thungarra Trails guide, their most popular walking trails. Follow one of the trails to the Fisherman's Lookout Obelisk and take in the panorama of the harbour and its rock lobster fishing fleet. History buffs can pick up a little maritime history here too, by checking out the plaques depicting local shipwrecks and continuing on to the Shipwreck Walk Trail at the Port Denison Foreshore. Along Ocean Drive, walk past 2D metal art ANZAC memorial soldiers, these soldiers were commissioned by the Shire of Irwin and the Dongara Returned and Services League (RSL). The grassed foreshore is a great spot for a waterside picnic or barbecue, with shady seating areas, free WiFi and a children’s playground. Accommodation options in the town offer beach resorts with ocean and marina views, holiday units, cabins and caravan parks. On Saturday nights in the Spring and Summer months, you can enjoy the yesteryear charm of a night at the drive-in cinema – one of the few remaining drive-ins in Western Australia. There’s also skating at the Irwin Recreation Centre. Illegal Tender Rum Co Distillery and Cellar Door offer behind-the-scenes, in-depth experience with their distillery tours and while you’re there you can grab yourself some of their unique, handmade, Australian and award-winning spirits.
