The bay lies wholly within the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park which is a pristine habitat for a rich variety of birds and marine life such as dolphins, sea lions and penguins. Rockingham Wild Encounters operates a ferry service and eco-cruise to Penguin Island to visit the local wildlife and take in the scenic highlights of the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. Safety Bay is also well-known within the kite-surfing community for its two kitesurfing areas, which are separated by a sand tongue. The Sand Bar in Safety Bay is a very safe place for beginners to practice their body drag and water start. Beginners who can’t yet go upwind should avoid the second kiting location, known as The Pond. Flat water combined with afternoon strong winds ensures The Pond is home to many of the world’s kitesurfing professionals. Two kitesurfing schools operate from Safety Bay, but even if you’re not keen to have a go yourself, the colour and spectacle of the kites out on the water is a sight to behold.
