The federal electorate of Sydney has an approximate area of 44 km².

It is comprised of the suburbs of Alexandria, Barangaroo, Beaconsfield, Camperdown, Chippendale, Darlington, Dawes Point, Erskineville, Eveleigh, Forest Lodge, Glebe, Haymarket, Lord Howe Island, Millers Point, Potts Point, Pyrmont, Redfern, Surry Hills, Sydney, The Rocks, Ultimo, Waterloo, Woolloomooloo and Zetland plus parts of 5 suburbs including Annandale, Darlinghurst, Newtown, Rosebery and St Peters.

It is comprised of parts of the councils of Sydney and Unincorporated.

It is comprised of parts of the state electorates of Balmain, Heffron, Newtown, Port Macquarie and Sydney.

It is surrounded by the federal electorates of Grayndler, Kingsford Smith, North Sydney, Warringah and Wentworth.
