Coal Mining was established in 1911, with the historic townships growing up around the coal mines. Major features of the area include Boomerang Public Golf Course, Illawarra Golf Course, Apple Shack at Glenbernie Orchard, Dharawal Nature Reserve and Darkes Forest Riding Ranch.
