Clermont, Queensland

Clermont image

Clermont is one of the most historic towns in northern Australia, renowned for its colorful past, dramatic history, and moments of tragedy. As the first inland settlement in the tropics, it truly epitomizes the spirit of a frontier town. In 1861, shepherds from Langton Downs were sent to build huts near a lagoon on the edge of a floodplain. Experienced prospectors among them soon discovered payable gold in the area, igniting the town's first gold rush. By 1862, miners began to flock to the region, setting up camp near what became known as Hood's Lagoon, named after one of the owners of Langton Station. In 1864, the town reserve was officially declared, and Clermont was born. It is believed the town's name was inspired by Clermont-Ferrand in France, the birthplace of Oscar de Satge, then owner of Wolfang Downs. Traces of Clermont’s frontier spirit remain visible today. Beneath the town’s modern prosperity lie remnants of its gold rush era, copper mines, timber getters, shearers, stockmen, and squatters. While mining development brought creature comforts to the area, the locals still exhibit a rugged individualism that reflects their heritage. A visit to the Clermont Historical Centre, located just two kilometres north of the town, offers a fascinating glimpse into this dramatic past. The centre houses over 8,000 artifacts that tell the story of Clermont’s journey from adversity to affluence. After exploring the Historical Centre, head to the memorial at the corner of Capricorn and Drummond Streets to see the marker indicating the height of the devastating 1916 floodwaters. Don’t miss the town’s quirky and Instagram-worthy "piano in a tree," a symbol of resilience and creativity born from Clermont's unique history.
