Unique Directions / Our Mates Place

Unique Directions provides Supported Independent Living primarily to young adults. 

 Unique Directions also has a newly renovated  Centre called Our Mates Place, located at Suite 3/42 East Gordon Street Mackay.

The moto behind “Our Mates Place” is “Where people with disabilities can shine”.

Our Mates Place will provide a space for people with disabilities to access programs and classes with their peers in an inviting, supportive and safe setting. It aims to also provide participants the choice to access several learning opportunities each day.

Some examples of the programs on offer will be:

Art / Drawing – which can then be displayed for sale in our Gallery

Wood Working

Photography and Movie Making

Cooking and Hospitality Skills

Music and Singing Classes / Karaoke

Gardening

Health and Beauty Room

The activities on offer will be driven by what participants want in order to develop their skills. Skills development, independence, learning how to make decisions and be in control of their own lives will be fostered through both formal and informal learning opportunities.

There will be purpose built spaces for each activity and participants will nominate what activities they would like to participate in. There’s even a Chill Out Space for new people to hang out and just try the activities until they feel comfortable in the Centre.

We will have Facilitators for each program and we are determined to provide genuine learning and peer development opportunities to people in the Mackay region.

The aim is to be accessible to everyone. People with or without an NDIS Plan will be welcomed to attend.

We also provide fully accessible shower and toilet facilities with a mobile hoist available. We invite people with disabilities from out of town, who are in Mackay for the day and require access to toilet or shower facilities to drop in and we will make them feel welcome. We ask that they just bring their own towel, toiletries, continence aids etc. if they will be required.
