Special care nursery

Our 8 bed Special Care Nursery (SCN) provides holistic neonatal care to unwell and premature babies for their ongoing health care needs.

Our Services include:

• Level 4+ neonatal care – for babies aged from 32 weeks to discharge as appropriate
• We manage all common neonatal problems and provide bubble CPAP and short term ventilation before transferring them to a tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
• Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
• Indigenous Health Care Worker visits Special Care Nursery
• Parent rooming for very premature babies, as appropriate
• Possible transfer of babies to the Special Care Nursery Mackay Base Hospital from a higher level neonatal care hospital as appropriate
• Neonatal retrievals from the private health sector and the Mackay Hinterland
