Stomal Therapy

About Us
The Townsville University Hospital facilitates a nurse-led stoma therapy clinic which provides education and care to pre-operative and post-operative patients. The stoma therapy nurse assists both inpatients and outpatients with assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of management plans.
The stoma therapy nurse works closely with the colorectal and general surgical medical team and in partnership with a patient’s family or carer, home care services, community nursing and GP referral to support ongoing care for patients with stoma concerns post discharge.
Services
Pre and post stoma procedure education and support
- Support and education for patients with ostomates
- Support for patients with faecal incontinence
- Education and training for the use of Peristeen
- Education, training and regular chait changes
Referral
Self-referral and referral from medical practitioners are accepted.
Referrals are to be forwarded to the surgical referral hub where it will be triaged and an appointment allocated based on clinical urgency.
